Signs of a possum in your home or business

Possums are nocturnal animals that sleep during the day and feed at night. Most possums leave their nest at the same time every night to go foraging for food (returning just before dawn). You may have a possum living in your home or business if you notice any of the following signs.

The dog or cat food gets raided regularly (possums can be omnivores on occasion).

You hear thumping, hissing, screeching and/or lip-smacking sounds coming from your roof at night – particularly in the early evening and before dawn.

Your cat or dog becomes agitated whilst staring at the ceiling, sub-floor or walls.

Your cat or dog becomes agitated whilst staring at the ceiling, sub-floor or walls.

You notice unpleasant smells (excrement, urine) coming from the roof.

You come across possum droppings (usually cylindrical in shape and greenish-brown to black in colour). At around 2cm long, adult possum droppings are slightly larger than rat droppings.

You notice chewed electrical wiring in the ceiling.

Your fruit trees, flowering plants and vegetables in the garden have a lot of gnaw marks on them.

It’s worth noting that possums aren’t always the cause of strange noises, foul odours and chewed electrical wiring in the ceiling. If we find rats or mice (rather than a possum) in your roof, we can organise for their eradication via an affiliated pest controller.

Possums we evict in Canberra

As the bush capital, Canberra is home to around 12 species of possum and glider (a related marsupial that can glide); however, it’s the possums that generally invade urban environments. The most common possum found in Canberra is the common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) – affectionately described by some residents (particularly gardeners) as an “evil fur ball.”

The other possum we encounter in Canberra’s suburbs is the common ringtail possum (Pseudocheirus peregrinus), which is smaller (though no less destructive) than the brushtail possum. The common ringtail possum loves fruit trees and flowers (particularly roses). It’s also a more sociable possum than the brushtail possum, which tends to be a loner.
